The quality of a product is something that shouldn’t be overlooked, but often enough, has been overlooked even by the biggest names in every industry. While there are many moving parts in executing an exceptional product, quality should always be at the forefront of the deliverables.
There are two major quality focuses that are integral for product execution: Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC). These terms are often used interchangeably, however, both have distinct differences even if they go hand-in-hand for quality management. Let’s dive into what those differences are and how these focuses work simultaneously.
Quality Assurance is established policies and procedures that ensure a product or service is delivered at a level of quality that has been agreed upon. When QA is adhered to, it ensures more than just the end product, but it also covers how the product is being developed and the quality management within. This helps to keep things on track and produce the most positive outcome since Quality Assurance is a complete system and not just a certain component of a process.
QA is integrated into each phase of the process to help prevent as many roadblocks, bugs, and issues as possible. QA is performed by the entire organization and not just a specific department or group.
Quality Assurance is a proactive measure with the goal of ensuring defects aren’t introduced. This can be established through a system or process that is ongoing and oversees the project overall.
Quality Control is a set of activities that are required to ensure the right quality that was defined in QA is implemented properly. QC is a subset of QA which validates that the product will meet business requirements and customer expectations.
QC requires a strategy of detection by a specific testing team. This is where glitches, design imperfections, accessibility issues, and/or security gaps are tested and fixed. Essentially, Quality Control is the final procedure before a product is launched and delivered.
Quality Control is a reactive measure. It helps to identify defects that may occur while a product is in development. While QA is a preventative strategy, QC is the testing follow-up for any issues that may get through.
