Overview: How We Host Websites at Sland Studios
Sland Studios provides managed cloud hosting designed to keep your website fast, stable, and secure, without you needing to think about servers, infrastructure, or hosting vendors.
We host websites using a managed cloud platform powered by Cloudways on DigitalOcean infrastructure. Cloudways specializes in running and maintaining server infrastructure, while Sland focuses on managing and supporting your WordPress website itself.
This approach ensures your website continues to run smoothly and reliably as traffic patterns change and usage grows, while Sland remains your primary point of contact for anything website-related.
When hosting is done well, it stays largely invisible; your site loads quickly, remains stable during busy moments, and doesn't demand attention from your team.
Why Sland Partners with Managed Hosting Specialist Cloudways
For many years, Sland self-managed hosting directly for our clients so we could keep our hands on the dials and fine-tune performance and reliability as closely as possible, and that approach served our clients well.
As our client base and technical requirements grew, it became clear that self-managing server infrastructure wasn't a scalable or responsible long-term model. Website hosting is a specialized discipline, and rather than pretend otherwise, we chose to partner with a team that focuses exclusively on this work.
Throughout 2026, for all current interested clients, we're transitioning fully to this managed hosting approach so we can continue delivering the same level of performance and reliability, while focusing our expertise where it matters most: building, integrating, and supporting WordPress websites.
How Hosting Works with Sland Studios
Sland works with Cloudways to manage the hosting environment your website runs on, so you don't have to.
Cloudways actively monitors the server behind your site, and we're alerted if anything needs to be adjusted or optimized. From there, we make sure your web server has the horsepower it needs to keep up with the demands of your business online.
What Cloudways Handles
- Server uptime and stability
- Infrastructure monitoring and automated alerts
- Server-level optimization and maintenance
- Daily backups and backup retention
What Sland Handles
- Managing your WordPress website
- Coordinating server-related changes with Cloudways
- Communicating clearly if hosting adjustments are needed
- Remaining your primary point of contact for all things website and hosting related
So, when we switch, I won't notice any changes?
That's right; After we facilitate a one-time migration to Cloudway servers, from your perspective, nothing about how you use your website changes, your site simply continues to run fast, stable, and reliably as demand grows.
Hosting Plans & Pricing
Our hosting plans are variable by design. Plans account for actual traffic and real usage, not arbitrary limits or one-size-fits-all packages, so your exact server and cost will be unique to your needs.
Hosting Plan Ranges
Small
Best suited for modest traffic with steady usage
Medium
Designed for active business websites with regular traffic and ongoing engagement
Large
Intended for business-critical websites that require additional horsepower to support many users simultaneously or handle seasonal spikes
Autonomous
For business-critical websites that don't have large ongoing structural website changes and require flexible automaticly adjusting server capacity for dynamic server and user needs.
Limited staging server options, and not ideal for clients with ongoing large scale structural update needs. Comes with Cloudflare Enterprise.
Billing notes:
- Hosting is billed annually. Mid-year plan changes will be adjusted via prorated invoices. Selecting the right package for you depends on traffic patterns, resource usage, and performance requirements.
- As traffic grows or usage patterns change, hosting plans may need to adjust to ensure your website continues to perform reliably. If an adjustment is ever recommended, we'll explain why and review options before making changes.
- Invoices will be in CAD, and currency conversion is subject to bank rate at the time of invoice.
- Large and Autonomous servers go beyond listed price ranges. For clients requiring custom needs, there are additional plans we can discuss to fit your needs.
What's Included with Hosting

Included with All Hosting Plans
Managed Cloud Environment
Cloudways + DigitalOcean infrastructure
Server Monitoring
Uptime monitoring and automated alerts
Daily Backups
14-day retention window (provided and managed by Cloudways)
Staging Environment
Access for testing larger changes
Quarterly WordPress Updates
Core updates applied quarterly

Theme and plugin updates (as compatible)
Hosting is focused on stability, availability, and operational reliability.
It does not include ongoing content changes, feature development, optimization work, or advisory services. Those items are handled separately through hourly support or an ongoing support retainer.
Note: Quarterly software updates that trigger maintenance work (eg. website work to maintain compatibility after an update) may require billable work to complete.
What's Not Included with Hosting
Hosting is intentionally scoped to infrastructure and baseline website upkeep. The following are not included:
- Content updates, page edits, or publishing support
- Control Panels (cPanel, PLESK, etc.)
- Cloudflare and Cookie Consent are not included by default, but highly recommended
- Nameserver, DNS Zone File, or Email management
- Design changes, layout refinements, or UX improvements
- New features, functionality, or custom integrations
- SEO strategy, audits, optimization, or reporting
- Accessibility audits or remediation work
- Analytics setup, tracking configuration, or reporting
- Training, documentation, or "how should we…" guidance
- Third-party licenses, subscriptions, or software costs
- Emergency or after-hours work outside maintaining website uptime per SLA
This separation keeps hosting predictable and ensures additional work is properly scoped, prioritized, and supported.
Recommended Approach
Select the appropriate hosting plan
Connect with us to discuss what server specifications you require
Add Cloudflare for additional speed and security
Highly recommended if your website is business critical to further enhance stability, security, and site speed.
Add Cookie Consent plugin
Required if you are seeking web compliancy.
Consider your backup requirements
Default 14 days of backups is typically fine for most organizations, but refer to your IT provider to determine organizational requirements.
Optional Add-Ons
Some services sit outside the core hosting scope but can be added where appropriate.
Cloudflare Enterprise
Highly Recommended
Service: Fully Managed by Cloudways
$120 CAD / year per domain
~$90 USD / year per domain
Cloudways will fully manage your Cloudflare CDN, configuring and enabling an additional layer of security and performance in front of your website. This is an optional, but highly recommended add-on, to enhance site security and speed, without requiring management.
Why you might need this
- Blocks malicious bots and unwanted traffic
- Adds protection against common attacks
- Improves performance through traffic filtering and caching
- Reduces server load during traffic spikes
- You would benefit from a fully managed ongoing service by Cloudways
Cloudflare Free
Alternative Option
Service: Self Managed by Client IT
$0 CAD / year per domain
(Basic Cloudflare plan)
Cloudflare Free provides a foundational layer of protection and performance in front of your website. It's a good starting point for lower-risk or lower-traffic sites that want basic safeguards without additional ongoing cost, but initial and ongoing configuration will be the responsibility of the Client (or Client IT). This plan offers limited configurability and protection compared to Enterprise, but still improves baseline resilience.
Why you might choose this option
- Basic protection against common automated threats
- Entry-level performance improvements through global caching
- Helps absorb minor traffic spikes
- No additional licensing cost
- Your IT department wants to retain full control and has the skillset to self-manage
Cookie Consent
Recommended
Free: 5k page views/month
Basic: 100k page views/month - $240 CAD/yr (~$180 USD/yr)
Pro: 300k page views/month - $500 CAD/yr (~$370 USD/yr)
Ultimate: Unlimited page views/month - $1,100 CAD/yr (~$810 USD/yr)
We achieve Cookie compliance requirements through CookieYes (Optional add-on sold separately and priced based on usage).
Why you might need this
- Supports accessibility and compliance expectations (including some ADA considerations)
- May be a legal requirement that clients will need to assess based on your place of business, & visitors place of residence.
- Provides transparency around cookies and tracking
- Commonly required for public-facing or regulated organizations
Extended Backups
Optional
Cost: TBD
Default backup scenario included with hosting: Daily backups with a 14-day retention window are included through Cloudways. Longer-term retention or custom backup strategies can be added if required.
Why you might need this
- Restore points beyond 14 days
- Internal retention or compliance requirements
- Additional peace of mind for critical data
Important to note: Cloudflare CDN Options
Consult your IT department to confirm what option works best for your organization. For organizations requiring support, we recommend Cloudflare Enterprise for ease and peace of mind. For organizations who need to retain full Nameserver and DNS control, consider Cloudflare Enterprise or Cloudflare Free.
- While there is no ongoing charge for Cloudflare Free, there is an initial effort to configure along with potential ongoing configuration.
- Cloudflare Free offers limited control, visibility, and support. Advanced security rules, proactive threat mitigation, priority support, and fine-grained performance tuning are not included. This would be the responsibility of the Client IT to manage. For business-critical websites, high-traffic events, or organizations with low tolerance for downtime, we strongly recommend Cloudflare Enterprise.
- Any efforts required by Sland to set up or maintain Cloudflare Free will be billable. Consultation for Cloudflare Free required of Sland is very limited and will be based on the direction provided by the Client IT. If additional consultation is required, Cloudflare Enterprise is recommended.
Client-Managed Hosting (Opt-Out Option)
If you prefer to manage your own website hosting, you are absolutely free to do so!
In this scenario, you would select and manage your own hosting provider, and Sland would support the WordPress website itself, not the server it runs on.
What This Means in Practice
- Server uptime, monitoring, backups, and security are handled by you or your hosting provider
- Sland supports your website application, not the hosting environment
- Hosting-related issues may take longer to resolve when multiple vendors are involved
- Time spent diagnosing or working around server-level issues may be billable
Example:
If your website is slow or unavailable due to server limitations or misconfiguration, Sland may need to spend time investigating, confirming the cause, and coordinating next steps. That diagnostic work may fall outside managed hosting and be billed separately.
Self-managed hosting is not recommended for most clients but remains available if it better fits your internal needs.
Important:
Clients opting to self-host typically incur higher ad-hoc web support billable costs due to the effort required to investigate support requests and issues that may arise without having full context or access to your hosting environment.
Transitioning Existing Clients (DigitalOcean → Cloudways)
If you're currently hosted on Sland's self-managed DigitalOcean infrastructure, we'll be coordinating a transition to our Cloudways-managed platform throughout 2026. We'll schedule this directly with you and communicate timing clearly.
What's Not Changing
Your Website
Design, content, and structure remain the same
Your Domain/URL
Domain name and URLs stay identical
WordPress Access
How you log into and manage WordPress
Your Point of Contact
How you work with and contact Sland
Support Process
How support requests are submitted
This transition focuses on infrastructure only, not how your website looks or functions.
Opportunity For Updates
If you've got some larger-scale updates, revisions, or have been looking for the best opportunity for that website face-lift that has been on your mind, this is the perfect opportunity! We can transition your website to a staging environment on Cloudways, build it behind the scenes, and launch your vision on the new server environment seamlessly!
Common Scenarios and Examples
Billable vs Non-Billable
Hosting needs to be upgraded - billable
Cause: Site is receiving more traffic than it can sustain and your website slows down, displays a white page, or even error message. Server restart and upgrade may be required.
Result: Future hosting invoices prorated to new cost + billable time to make the upgrade
Client requests backup restore - billable
Sland to deploy a staging environment to restore backup. Review, QA, and potentially make updates or go live as required.
Website hack recovery - billable
Sland will review website code, plugins, and third-party connections to attempt to quarantine / remove malicious code and/or restore from a stable backup.
Symptoms: Site is loading a white page, website is showing injected content (strange ads, pages redirecting, or displaying third-party content, etc.)
Normal Causes: Out of date plugins, vulnerable third party integrations, custom code, weak passwords, sharing passwords, not updating passwords, sending credentials via insecure means like email, etc.
Third party software / Plugin requires server upgrade - billable
Cause: Software your website relies on requires an upgraded version of server software to run securely. Eg. Wordpress, plugins, third-party integrated software says it needs a higher version of PHP to run, etc. We would backup, upgrade, test, and launch your upgraded website.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does managed hosting cost more than shared hosting?
Managed cloud hosting provides dedicated resources, proactive monitoring, security patching, backups, and uptime accountability, designed for business-critical websites, not personal or hobby sites. These costs are industry standard for Managed Hosting.
I was happy with my current hosting arrangement with Sland, why the change?
We're making this change not because anything was broken, but because hosting has become a specialized discipline of its own.
As our client base and technical requirements have grown, it made more sense to partner with a managed hosting provider whose sole focus is server reliability, security, monitoring, and uptime. By moving to Cloudways on DigitalOcean, your website continues to run fast and stable, with added resilience behind the scenes.
From your perspective, nothing about how you use or manage your website changes — it simply benefits from a more robust, future-proof hosting environment while Sland remains your primary point of contact.
Does hosting include website guidance or improvements?
No. Hosting covers infrastructure and baseline maintenance. Ongoing improvements and guidance are handled through hourly support or a retainer.
Who manages backups?
Backups are provided and managed by Cloudways, and restored by Sland as specifically requested (billable).
What happens if I need to restore to a backup?
As server-side backups are primarily for a 'disaster recovery' type scenario, restoring to a previous backup version within the 14 day window involves manual and billable efforts.
We will track billable time to coordinate on exactly what backup version you want to restore to, deploy a staging environment to test, apply quality assurance, and upon confirmation launch, or alternatively, package a backup for your own deployment purposes.
Should you require a custom backup solution (extended backup retention window, easier access to backups yourself, etc.), we can discuss and make these arrangements.
Does Sland manage Email?
No. Email falls within the purview of your IT provider, and due to the sensitive and business-critical nature, Sland does not manage email nor DNS settings to configure email.
Can my hosting plan change later?
Yes. Plans are based on real usage. Any recommended changes are discussed in advance and billed via prorated invoice.
Will this change affect my website?
No*. Hosting changes do not affect content, design, or URLs.
*With the exception of a one-time free migration for current Sland hosted clients
I need a predictable hosting budget. Why are plans shown in ranges?
Due to the variable nature of website traffic and user habits, your web server may need more horsepower to keep up with demands. An underpowered server will appear slow or even display time-out errors which is not ideal for user experience.
After working together to confirm your server needs, you can expect a period of time where we monitor your server specifications closely to adjust as required. Our initial consultation should keep things from changing too drastically. If you require a guaranteed hosting cost, we'd suggest a larger plan to accommodate growth.
I can't afford website downtime or poor performance. How can you help?
Our retainer and ongoing support offerings allot us quarterly check-ins that provide us helpful context on your upcoming events, marketing announcements, and other events that may trigger busy website traffic moments. Retainer clients benefit from monthly maintenance for eCommerce clients. Combined with consideration of your current website server specifications and our Large and Autonomous plans, we can find the right plan for you that has enough horsepower for your needs.
I can go to a cheaper website hosting provider. Why should I go with a Managed Hosting plan with Sland and Cloudways?
We utilize Cloudways managed cloud hosting platform which is designed for business-critical websites. This means your site runs on dedicated cloud resources (not low-cost shared hosting), with active monitoring, automated alerts, and the ability to scale as traffic and usage change. Combined with our included quarterly hosting updates (or better yet, onboarding to one of our ongoing support retainer plans), we're saving you time, money, and you won't need to learn the ins-and-outs about website hosting when you can't afford downtime.
Why am I seeing charges related to a server or software upgrade?
Web servers and the software that runs on them require periodic updates to maintain security, stability, and performance. Occasionally, a necessary server or platform update can affect how parts of a website function. When this happens, we'll flag it clearly and outline any website work required to ensure everything continues to operate smoothly on the updated environment.
Time spent reviewing, updating, and validating your website in response to these changes is billed as support work, so your site remains secure, compatible, and reliable.
What happens if my site is slow to load, displays an error, or loads just a white page?
Our Managed Hosting Provider Cloudways will typically be the first to notice any issues with your website, and work to resolve it without prompting. Should the issue require action by Sland to resolve, or more server power to keep up with demand, Sland will be alerted and work to resolve accordingly. Some scenarios are included below:
- Potential upgrade to your hosting package due to high server demand (may result in a prorated website hosting cost increase)
- Cloudways to review server errors, and possible bot attacks (if CloudFlare Enterprise is enabled) (not billable)
- Wordpress core, themes, and plugins reviewed; if an update is required, this is a billable maintenance fix
- Hack - billable
- Client broke it - billable
If you notice an issue with your site performance, please fill out our support request form with details.
It is after hours, and my website is having issues loading
- Fill out support request
- Reference our Hosting SLA for turnaround times
- See previous note for steps Sland will take
How does Cloudflare affect my Nameservers and DNS?
It is Sland's policy not to be the administrator of your domain nameservers or zone files, but rather utilize delegate access to assist in any configurations that may be necessary.
Option 1 (Cloudflare Enterprise): Assign your A records to Cloudflare, and they'll manage your configurations of Cloudflare Enterprise. You retain full control of your Domain Registrar, Nameservers, and other DNS Zone Files.
Option 2 (Cloudflare Free): Your IT department will need to create a Cloudflare account, and manage configurations accordingly. Any efforts required by Sland to assist in configuration will be billable. Any consultation on initial or ongoing configuration are limited (consider Cloudflare Enterprise for a fully managed solution).
